Community members

All community members are welcome to stop by during open hours without an appointment to receive a tour of the site.

All community members may participate in formal workshops by local experts for a small fee. Please see our workshops page for a list of currently scheduled events. Unless specifically stated in the workshop description, these do not require any preliminary training.

Community members may also sign up for an MLab membership.  Membership fees are as follows: an initial $30 pays for a $10 activation fee and a four-session card.  Future $30 payments get you a six-session card.  A “session” counts as time in the lab using tools during a single day, or dropping off a file to be printed on one of the machines.  Members may visit the MLab during open hours and receive training on tools (subject to monitor availability) and work on any tools for which they are trained.  Members may also use one of their sessions to participate in daily monitor-directed workshops.

To become a member, individuals should stop by the MLab during open hours for a free safety orientation. At the conclusion of the orientation, individuals will take a brief quiz to demonstrate an understanding of the safety guidelines and user policy. Individuals will also be required to sign a waiver.  Members receive an account through which monitors track training, projects, and use of tools and inventory. The entire process takes approximately 20 minutes.
